‘It’s Not Going To Be Your Night’

6 Apr

OK, so the Phillies are not going to go undefeated.  No perfect season.  No 162-0.  Get over it.

It’s always good to get that first loss out of the way.  Though I’m not so sure Cole Hamels would agree.  But sometimes there are signs right from the start that it’s just not going to be your night:

When the opposing pitcher gets two hits in one inning, chances are it’s just not going to be your night.

When Ben Francisco hits two long fly ball outs that on most nights would have been ‘out’ of the park, you know it’s just not going to be your night.

When you turn on the tv in the third inning to see Kyle Kendrick on the mound,  you get that sinking feeling that it’s just not going to be your night.

When your lead-off and clean-up hitters go 0 for 9 with 6, count ’em 6!  strike-outs, it’s definitely not going to be your night. (or theirs!)

When the offensive highlight of the game is a perfect bunt single by Jimmy Rollins, that might be a clue that it’s just not going to be your night.

When the best news you can find is that the Red Sox are now 0-4, it’s just not going to be your night. (By the way, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, no team has ever started 0-4 and gone on to win the World Series.  Hmmmm.)

When on this same night that the Phillies lose to the Mets 7-1, the 76ers lose to the Celtics by 17 and the Flyers lose to Ottowa 5-2, you know it’s just not going to be anyone’s night.

But don’t despair, there is one consolation even after a dismal 7-1 loss to the Mets:

“The beauty of baseball is that even when you lose one, there’s an optimism about the next day.  My father used to say it all the time, ‘Keep your head up, kid.  There’s another game tomorrow.”

Cal Ripken, Jr.

And he should know.

Cal Ripken, Jr. holds the record for most consecutive games played at 2,632 which spans 17 seasons.

And that, my friends, is a lot of tomorrows!

Cole should also think of our favorite Scott Rolen quote in the vein of Cal Ripken Jr’s. I’m blanking on the correct wording right now, but it got me through many a soccer tournament.

I don’t remember the exact words either but but he said you have to act the same whether you’re 0 for 3 or 3 for 3. because if you play long enough you’re going to have a lot of both!
