Did Someone Call For A “Doc”tor?

26 Sep

If you listened closely yesterday, you could almost hear Roy “Doc” Halladay yell, “Clear!” as he strode purposefully to the mound.  He did everything but hook up the defibrillator pads as he told his teammates to stand back and let him do what he does best.

And then he did.  “Doc” provided a jumpstart to a team desperately in need of a spark.   He completely shut down the Mets (and shut them out) for six innings scattering four hits to  improve his record to 19-6  with a career-best 2.35 ERA.  The Phillies offense responded with 19 hits and nine runs and. most importantly, a victory.

That’s right, a win.  You remember those, right?  It was the Phillies first since they clinched home field over a week ago.  And it was a win that broke an eight-game losing streak, their longest in 11 years.  But who’s counting, right?

Come on, I wasn’t worried.  Were you?

It was only the 16th time this season that the Phillies have played with their everyday line-up but though the regulars were all there, some of them were in different places.  Manager Charlie Manuel moved Chase Utley into the second spot in the line-up (instead of his usual third), Hunter Pence was third and Shane Victorino was in the fifth spot, hitting behind Ryan Howard.

Since every starter in the line-up had a hit (including Halladay,) it’s likely that this new batting order may stay for a while as the Phillies head to Atlanta for the final three games of the regular season.

The Playoffs begin on Saturday, October 1st with Game 1 of the NLDS.  And though the Phillies’ opponent and even the time of the game are as yet unknown, there is one thing we know for sure.  The “Doc” will stride to the mound at Citizens Bank Park, once again, ready and willing to do what he does best.

Very concerned about Bastardo. His performance yesterday does not bode well for the playoffs.

I totally agree with you Chuck. Bastardo has been in a funk for the last month. He needs to find his mojo, juju, or whatever he calls it, and he needs to find it quick.

I agree with both of you. Who would you use for the eighth if he can’t get it together? ‘Lights Out’ Lidge to the rescue??? He’s actually been pretty good lately.

It looks like Karma was on the Cardinals side.

It certainly looks like you’re right, Fritz. But even karma can’t take the place of scoring a single run in an elimination game, now, can it?
