Regular readers of GBPH (and I hope that includes you!) know how I feel about Raul Ibanez.  Ever since he arrived in Philadelphia before the 2009 season, he represented all that is good in sports.  He was hard-working and soft-spoken.  He was always willing to take responsibility after a game whether he had the game-winning hit or went 0-4.

And he always appreciated and applauded the Phillies‘ fans.  From his first day to his last he had nothing but positive things to say about his time in Philadelphia and at times almost seemed incredulous that he had the chance to play for this team in front of these fans.  And he never missed a chance to say so:

“I appreciate their loyalty and passion, their sincere love of the game and their team. And their intense desire to win. I admire that they appreciate when their players give their all on the field.”

And there was never any doubt that you always gave your all, Raul.

So it was bittersweet to hear this morning that Raul Ibanez signed a one-year deal with the New York Yankees.  It is certainly a good fit for the 39-year-old Ibanez (who will turn 40 in June.)  The Yankees plan to use him as a left-handed designated hitter, a good way to extend the career of the aging veteran.  It will be good to see him continue to play baseball even in an opposing team’s uniform.

But I am truly sorry that he wasn’t able to win a championship with the Phillies.

I am sorry to see such a decent and kind man leave our clubhouse.

And I am surely sorry that we won’t be hearing those chants of Rauuuuuuul any more at the Bank.

Good luck, Raul.  I will be rooting for you, except of course when you play your old friends in Philadelphia.  Here’s one for the road.

Safe Travels

      Hey Butz,
How great to hear from you! Even about the Yankees. Miss you, doll. You take care of our Raul!

Could there be anyone who writes such a sensitive, sweet article?
It almost makes me want to watch baseball to see which players you’re talking about.
