Yes, that’s where I’ll be today, at the ballpark watching’ the Fightins and crazy K’s, Kyle Kendrick. Somehow it seems that whatever the rotation, whatever day I go, no matter how many aces the Phillies have on their pitching staff, I somehow always end up seeing Kyle Kendrick. And I’m not kidding. Really.
But I can take some comfort in the fact that Big Joe Blanton had a big win last night so maybe KK will follow in his footsteps. Blanton pitched a strong 7 1/3 innings against the Cubs giving up only two earned runs to give the Phillies a much needed win.
Other highlights were a big 2-out bases loaded hit for Jimmy Rollins who was back in the lead-oof spot for the first time this year. Coincidence? Let’s see if Charlie puts J-Roll back in his familiar spot again today.
And we can’t leave out the performance of Chooooooch. It was Carlos Ruiz who put the Phils ahead with a two-run single in the fourth. Then after being hit by a foul tip on the knee and falling to the ground in pain in the top of the 6th, Chooch came to bat in the bottom of the inning and hit an insurance home run to give the Phils some breathing room. Maybe he didn’t want to have to run too fast with his bruised knee. Blanton also credited Ruiz for his job behind the plate “calling a fantastic game.”
And not to be forgotten, the Phillies bullpen continues to be solid with Chad Squalls and Jonathan Papelbon again getting the job done quickly and quietly.
All in all a much better night for the team and their fans.
Let’s hope KK can continue where Big Joe left off. Come on, we have to win on the Phantic’s birthday, right??
