You Just Can’t Make This Stuff Up

16 May

One of the things I continue to love about baseball is that stuff happens that you just wouldn’t believe if you hadn’t seen it with your own eyes.  Yesterday’s game featured some good ones.

Cliff Lee with his 1.95 ERA in five starts this season, including a 1-0 loss in San Francisco on April 18 when he threw 10 scoreless innings is still trying to get his first win of the year while rookie left-hander Jake Diekman, already got his first win while making his Major League debut.  He deserved it, too.  He entered his first big league game with runners on second and third with two out in the ninth in a tie ball game and struck out the Astros Marwin Gonzalez.  Diekman went on to strike out two more batters in the 10th to end up with that first big league win.

You just can’t make this stuff up.

Hunter Pence looked like the game’s goat when in the ninth inning with Astros pinch runner Brian Bogusevic at second, Pence fielded a J.D Martinez single to right seemingly keeping the runner at third, but then Pence dropped the ball as he was getting ready to throw it back to the infield allowing Bogusevic to score to tie the game.

But just one inning later, in the bottom of the tenth, who hit a walk-off home run, his second of the game, to pull victory out of the hands of defeat?  All together now:  Hunter Pence!

You just can’t make this stuff up.

It was just the first time this season, after winning a record 102 games last year, that the Phillies have been able to win three games in a row.  And oh, yeah, who was on the mound for Hunter’s heroics?  Old friend Brett Myers.

You just can’t make this stuff up.

By the way, Hunter Pence’s last walk-off home run was when he was still with the Astros.  And who did he hit it against?  Say it with me:  The Philadelphia Phillies.

You just can’t make this stuff up.

And did you notice the kid sitting behind home plate?  He was holding up a homemade sign that read:  “All I want for my birthday is a Hunter Pence home run.”  Well here’s how it looked at the end of the game

Yep, you just can’t make this stuff up!
