I know $144 million is a ridiculous amount of money and it’s easy for me to say since none of it comes out of my pocket but after watching Cole Hamels last night, I would say he was worth every penny.

Hamels completely dominated the Miami Marlins  allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out five in the 4-0 Phillies win.  He is just the third Phillies pitcher in the last 20 years to throw back-to-back complete game shutouts.  Cliff Lee actually threw three straight last season  (Where is that guy??) and Corey Lidle  (Remember that guy??) did it in 2004.

(Ok, I know it’s not the most articulate response but you come  up with something better.  I’ll wait…… See what I mean?)

With last night’s win, Hamels’ record improved to 13-6 with a 2.91 ERA. He ranks first in the National League in innings pitched (163 2/3), top five in strikeouts (158), tied for fifth in wins, and eighth in ERA.

It took Cole 113 pitches last night to complete the game and only two Marlins reached third base. A week ago, Hamels hadn’t thrown a shutout since 2009, but now he’s pitched two in a row.

King Cole is in the midst of a 22-inning scoreless streak in which he has allowed 14 hits and one walk and has struck out 15.  He has allowed just two extra-base hits in that stretch.  He has also become must watch TV.  For those of you who like to plan ahead, Cole’s next start is Saturday August 18th at 6:10 against the Milwaukee Brewers. I thought I’d be going through Olympics withdrawal but after Cole Hamels’ breath-taking performance last night, all I can say is……wait for it…..
