While You Were Sleeping

7 May

Last night’s Phillies game was a good reminder of why you shouldn’t bet on baseball.  After losing two straight games at home to a last place Miami Marlins team missing their best hitter, the Phillies had to make the long trip west to face the defending World Champion San Francisco Giants.

And what have the Giants been doing lately?  Let’s see. They’re on a six game winning streak during which they’ve been hitting the cover off the ball.  Not to mention the fact that the Phillies just never seem to hit at pitcher-friendly AT&T park anyway.

They’ve scored two runs or less in 10 of their last 16 games there and have only won four of the 14 series they’ve played since the park opened.  Did you put away your wallet yet?

Oh yeah, and did I mention the guy on the mound last night for the Giants?   Madison Bumgarner who is 3-0 so far this season with a downright stingy 1.55 ERA.  Opponents are only hitting .181 off him and before last night he hadn’t allowed more than two runs in a game. Seemingly not a good match for a struggling Phillies offense that has scored three or fewer runs in 18 of their 32 games this season

So if you want to make a safe bet, try the Miami Heat.  Well, not so fast.

But back to baseball.  So with all that riding against them, with Roy Halladay’s struggles and now injury clearly taking its toll on the field and in the clubhouse, what does this team do?  They scored two runs in the second tying the most runs Bumgarner has given up all year and went on to have eight hits and score five runs in six innings against the Giants ace.

Add in a knock-out performance by Cliff Lee who allowed just five hits and two runs and struck out six in eight innings and the Phillies went on to beat the Giants 6-2.  With the win, Lee improved his record to 3-2 with a 3.26 ERA

Could this be the same Phillies team that had five hits and scored only two runs in those losses to the Marlins?

The same team that has been shut out in five of their last 19 games?

The same team that night after night has been making rookie pitchers look like Cy Young?

How do you explain that?

The answers to the above:  Yes.  Yes.  Yes.  I don’t have a clue.

So what have we learned today?

Just when you think you know what’s going to happen this crazy game will surprise you.

Never count out Cliff Lee.

It’s always darkest before the dawn?

And don’t bet on baseball.

Kendrick vs. Lincecum. tonight  Hey, no snickering.  Haven’t you learned anything???
