Philadelphia Phillies Darren Daulton: Right On, Fight On

3 Aug

Sometimes there are things that matter more than wins and losses.

Sometimes, even in a season like this one, there are memorable moments that put life in perspective and remind us all of what’s really important.

One of those moments came last night before the game between the Phillies and the Braves.

Right On, Fight On

Former Phillie Darren “Dutch” Daulton, made his return to the ballpark yesterday as part of the Phillies alumni weekend festivities.  It was the first public appearance for the popular 51-year-old catcher since he underwent brain cancer surgery a little over a month ago.

Daulton, who many thought would not make it to this year’s alumni events, was all smiles when he spoke to the media on Friday.

“All I’ve spoken about with Philadelphia, for many years, is, I feel like it’s my home.  And I feel like it’s my family. I really enjoy this, and this weekend we’re going to have a blast.”

Daulton spent nearly his entire career with the Phils and was the unquestioned leader of the surprising Phillies team that went from last place in 1992 to National League champions the following year. Curt Schilling, Daulton’s teammate and battery mate during that time was inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame last night before the game and had warm words for his former teammate.

“I played for 20 years, and I never ever played before, during or after with a better clubhouse presence than Darren Daulton… He’s the reason we did what we did in ’93.”

Daulton also thanked the fans for their support during his remarks,

“Thank you for everybody here in Philadelphia,” he said. “And the fans . . . it’s just phenomenal.”

And when he was introduced as a member of the Phillies Wall of Fame on Friday, the fans thanked him back with a loud and enthusiastic standing ovation.

Although Darren Daulton still has quite a fight ahead of him, after this weekend, he can be sure that he won’t be facing that fight alone.
